LASER HAIR REMOVAL FAQs
HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK? Laser hair removal works by sending a beam of laser light to a group of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root, but not enough power to harm the surrounding skin.  This process is called selective photothermolysis.  It is selective because it targets only the hair and not the skin.

The Laser beam finds the hair follicles by targeting the substance that gives skin and hair dark color - melanin.  Therefore, the ideal candidate for laser has dark hair and light skin.  The laser will not work on people with red, white, gray or true blond hair.  The hot laser light will also be attracted to the melanin in the skin, so people with suntans, or dark skin types are at more of a risk for discoloration of pigment and other side effects.

HOW IS LASER DIFFERENT FROM ELECTROLYYSIS? Hair Removal by Laser is NOT ELECTROLYSIS.  Electrolysis is a method of removing individual hairs one-at-a-time by directing an electric current into each hair follicle.  Laser hair removal is the high tech/modern day method of destroying massive amounts of hair follicles with a simple trigger pull. Electrolysis treatment is one hair at a time.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? The greatest advantage of laser is speed of treatment in conjunction with long lasting results.  So it is especially great for large areas such as when compared to electrolysis, which is permanent, but excruciatingly time consuming for large areas. The length of the procedure largely depends on the area being treated, but can also vary from person to person.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? Everyone will require at least three treatments for good results, because while all hair is temporarily disabled during each treatment, not all hair is destroyed.  A series of treatments is necessary to allow results to accumulate.  Most people do not need to continue beyond six treatments, however some might need up to 8 in order to maximize results.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON AREAS FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL? The most popular areas for women are facial hair, bikini line, underarms, and legs. The most popular areas for men are the back, chest, and shoulders.

IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL SAFE? Yes. Laser hair removal is a lunch time procedure since there is no recovery time. Patients can return to work or play immediately. These lasers do not remove skin, so the risks are very low. Side effects, if any, are minor in nature. They may include swelling around the hair follicle, which are in fact, desired clinical results and indicate that the follicle has responded to the treatment. Our practitioner will be happy to advise you regarding possible side effects.

DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL HURT? The level of pain from laser hair removal depends on the patient and that person's skin and hair type. Typically, the treatment tends to hurt less for people with lighter skin tones and finer hair. Most people however, tolerate laser hair removal very well.

In case the patient is uncomfortable, the laser technician offers a topical anesthetic, or an ice pack that numbs the skin.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Fees for laser hair removal vary depending on the area. Our laser hair technician offers a complimentary 15-minute consultation with patch test. During the consultation we will be able to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for laser hair removal, what the fees for the area(s) you need treated will be, and for the number of treatments you will need.
