5 Minutes with Meg: Stress Edition

I've been thinking a lot about...stress and exercise. Exercise makes people feel better. Among other things, it experientially and physiologically lowers our stress levels. Peculiar thing about exercise: most of us know it's good for us. And many of us exercise less than we plan to/would like to/feel we should.

Do you know what your body is made of?

Has anyone ever asked you about your body composition? Maybe you heard it from a doctor at a recent physical, maybe your personal trainer mentioned it during your latest workout, maybe you read the term in a recent article about getting fit for fall. But do you know what it really means? Have you ever asked yourself: What exactly is body composition?

Fall Back into Your Routine

Is it really that time of year again? Where did the summer go? The kids have gone back to school, the CNE has come and gone, and we're all trying to squeeze in the last few days of holidays before officially getting back into our routine. And while I have to admit that I've let my daily routine slide somewhat this summer, it's now time for us to switch gears and get focused again.

Journey Back to the World Cup: Injury Recovery

In September 2017, Meagan Brown joined Canadian National Alpine Skier, Ali Nullmeyer's team, traveling with Team Nullmeyer on the World Cup Circuit. Unfortunately, Ali's season came to an abrupt end when she suffered a season ending injury just four weeks into her training. After a long offseason of recovery, Team Nullmeyer decided to begin their quest to compete at the World Cup again in October 2018.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a term used to identify a large fabric of connective tissue that surrounds all muscle, ligaments, and bone. It is made up of collagen, elastin, and a liquid component called ground substance. This gives structure to our muscle; each and every muscle cell in our body is connected to the other by fascia. Our muscle is essentially nothing more than tissue in a Myofascial "sack".

The Truth Behind the Theragun & How We're Using it...

Over the last few months, the interest in the Theragun has exploded, in large part due to slow motion videos of athletes using the tool on Instagarm, and its appearance at large sporting events like this year's MLB Home Run Derby. At the Toronto Athletic Club, Barclay and Chris Broadhurst, the Sport Medicine Clinic's Director, are once again at the leading edge, having already brought the Theragun to the TAC, introducing it to our personal trainers, the team at the Clinic, and our Members.

What it Feels Like to be Part of History...

A little over a month ago, the Toronto Raptors brought basketball fans across Toronto and all of Canada to their feet, winning their first ever NBA Championship and bringing the Larry O'Brien trophy home. In the weeks since, we've continued to bask in the glow of being Champions - with very few days passing without seeing Raptors and Championship apparel around the city. And while we think we had a prime seat to witness history, our view was nothing like that of the Sport Medicine Clinic's Zahra Hashwani.

Is it Time for a Biomechanical Running Assessment?

Two of the clinicians at the Sport Medicine Clinic, Andrea Lilley (Athletic Therapist) and Briana Bradstreet (Physiotherapist), are now offering biomechanical running assessments. Biomechanical running assessments are for runners of all levels: from novice, to marathon runners and triathletes. During a recent course, they learned: how to assess running biomechanics, how to properly assess and treat injuries when they occur, and how to know when a runner should consider changing their shoes to those with less support using the minimalist shoe index.

Ah summer - patios, sun, fun, and, of course, VACATION!!!! Just because you have some time off doesn't mean you should throw your workout routine out the window. You don't want all your hard work over the last few months to be compromised just because you may not have a gym or the right equipment available to you.

5 Minutes with Meg: Shame Edition

I've been thinking a lot lately about...the power of positive thinking. There is no perfect, no 100%, no "I have to" or "should" in exercise and diet. There are lots of choices. Some of them will support your fitness and health goals and some won't. But, at the end of the day, the important thing is that you keep making the positive choices that shift the needle in the right direction.

She continued adding to her education and experience (and her exercise routine) to get her to where she is today. Here's what she learned.

Preventative Maintenance Massage: Why you need it & how often

Our massage therapists, practitioners, and trainers are all frequently asked how often our Members should receive a massage. Is it something you only need when you’re injured? Should you get a massage a couple of times a year? The reality is there isn’t a straightforward, single answer that works for everyone, but this is the perfect time for us to discuss preventative maintenance.

You and Your Pelvic Floor: What You Need to Know

The muscles of the pelvic floor, how they function, and their importance seems to be all over the media lately. What is Fascial Stretch Therapy?

Posted: Feb 4, 2019

At this time of year, we are often caught with our heads bowed down to the ground retreating from the snow as we make our way into work, bowed down at our computers all day, and bowed down at the end of our work day. Poor posture is a sweeping epidemic afflicting almost every person in the world. The sight of a forward head position, rounded shoulders, internally rotated arms, and anterior-tilted pelvis is commonplace in offices, at restaurants, and in the gym. If these patterns are left unchecked, injury rates increase, breath and mood can be impeded, and performance diminished.

---

But, let’s take a step back so you can understand the basics…

---

We were given all the athletic ability and function we need as an infant, however, through our lifestyle today, our biology has changed for the worse. Fascial Stretch Therapy™ (FST) is a pain-free assisted stretch system that assesses and improves restrictions in the body originally designed for sport – beginning in the NFL and later branching off to other sports and leagues, such as the NHL and rugby. FST™ can help you to perform better, prevent injury, and reduce pain. We are pleased to have team members at all three of our Clubs who are trained in this therapy and are introducing FST™ to our Members. But, before we tell you about these trainers, we wanted to introduce you to this modality.

What is fascia & joint capsules?

Fascia is a network of layered connective tissue that surrounds your muscles, nerves, bones, organs, and joints; without your fascia, you would fall apart. A joint capsule is also a connective tissue structure that surrounds joints and is involved in optimizing the mechanical function of the joint, as well as giving it nutrients.

When fascia and joint capsules are restricted, it can cause:

  • Decreased joint space, leading to degenerative joint diseases and osteoarthritis
  • Increased muscle tone, leading to trigger points, strains, tendonitis, and tears
  • Increased nervous tissue tone, leading to headaches, trigger points, and muscle tightness
  • Increased scar tissue formation
  • Decreased blood flow and energy levels
  • …and much more…

What is Fascial Stretch Therapy™ (FST)?

Fascial Stretch Therapy™ is a pain-free, unique, complete, and complementary system of table-based assisted stretching, focusing on the fascia and joint capsule as the key elements in achieving optimal flexibility, strength, performance, and pain relief. FST™ is one of the quickest, most effective, and most pleasant methods to eliminate pain, restore function, move and feel better in activities of life, fitness, and sports!

Members of all ages can benefit from FST™, including anyone who has been cleared by a physician for stretching and active movement, fitness enthusiasts, and athletes of all levels. And one of the greatest benefits of FST™? The results are almost instantaneous. After a single session, we guarantee that you’ll notice a marked improvement.

Can you spot the difference between Micheal’s left and right shoulder? A few tractions with Fascial Stretch Therapy on his left shoulder, and this was the result!

We all carry stress in different parts of our body, like Micheal, it can be through our pectoral muscles and upper traps. FST™ has the ability to decompress the joints and through FST™, even your chiropractor can better adjunct your joints, and be more malleable for your RMT to get to those hard to reach places!

Who should consider FST™?

Those with chronic back pain: Oftentimes, chronic back pain is associated with muscle tightness and joint stiffness; general weakness, fear of movement, and certain activities; and lack of mobility. FST™ can help to eliminate your pain and restore function so you can return to your normal life.

Those who regularly train: When you’re training regularly, you need your body to recover quickly. FST™ improves blood flow to tired muscles, which helps you to recover faster from your tough training sessions with less soreness.

Those who are active: FST™ can help you to run faster, lift heavier, boost endurance, improve coordination, and increase flexibility.

Those rehabbing an injury: Through FST™, your therapist can help increase your range of motion by eliminating adhesions and allowing your body to get rid of unnecessary compensations.

What are the benefits of stretching?

Stretching can:

  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce risk of injury
  • Reduce or eliminate tight muscles
  • Reduce or eliminate stiff joints
  • Improve circulation
  • Improve posture
  • Improve and enhance sex
  • Make you feel and look younger
  • Make you stronger
  • Make you taller
  • Healthier bones
  • Better range of motion

The best way to know if FST™ is right for you is to give it a try. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain – set it free with FST™!
