Fascial Distortion Model
What is the Fascial Distortion Model?

The Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) is an anatomical perspective in which the underlying etiology of virtually every musculoskeletal injury (and many neurological and medical conditions, as well) is considered to be comprised of one or more of the six specific pathological alterations of the body's connecting tissues (fascial bands, ligaments, tendons, retinacula, etc.).

What will my first FDM appointment be like?

During your first visit with an FDM provider, they will walk you through an in-depth clinical assessment. This gives them a chance to survey the current state of your injury or pain and evaluate its cause.

This clinical assessment is followed by hands-on soft tissue and joint mobilization to help with the healing of the painful areas and their surrounding damaged tissues.

If necessary, you might be prescribed personalized stretching regiments and exercises. These are important to help keep other injuries from happening and speed up your recovery.

Is the Fascial Distortion Model covered by OHIP or my insurance?

Your insurance plan may offer coverage. Please check your individual plans for more details. FDM is not covered under OHIP plans. The Adelaide Health Clinic will provide you with an invoice to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What will an FDM treatment feel like?

Since it most likely required a lot of force to cause a fascial distortion, it will require an equally great amount of force to correct the distortion. We have identified six different types of fascial distortions that all contain their own distinct form of correction.

Experiences of discomfort during treatment should be expected, although in most cases the patient is able to acknowledge that the discomfort during treatment 'hurts good' similar to a deep tissue massage.

Treatments can include ironing out fascial seams, smoothing out fascial coils, reversing fascial transition zones on attachment points, minimizing protruding tissue through fascial planes, unfolding and refolding fascial folds, and releasing fixated joints.

The patient's presentation along with the FDM assessment will dictate and identify the type of fascial distortion involved and the proper corrective technique will then be utilized.
